Sweet Sweet

I cannot do justice to my cat, but I will post this anyway.  He is evoking a lot of writing as my companion of 14 years has a progressive kidney disease. I can see those wings of his clearer and clearer every day. May they take him far when he flies to a world that deserves him.

Housecat

His paw
is not a
housecat’s
paw

though his eyes
are green
and soft
and he
keeps
his black fur
silky
endlessly
before warm
fires.

Still, when he is
curled on your lap
your heart may
skip
to see them
larger than they
should be
tipped with
razor claws
they could
take on
a lion.

This housecat
knows
when he places
his paw
on your cheek
just below your eye-

He knows
he has
your wild heart
tamed.

The Cat

Sometimes, sometimes
he will tuck in
his claws
and offer his
silken
body
freely
into your hands.

A wild thing
calling you
Home
your heart echoes
his and
for a
moment
you are both
tame.

You will never
know why he
gives his
greatest treasure
to you,
nor why your
wild heart
chooses
to rest in
his paws,
trusting with
abandon it is
safe,
when greater
beasts have
failed it.

(This was is inspired by my cat Smokey- he’s been a silky companion for twelve years now!)
