Clarissa, a magical tale for 9 – 12 yr olds

Other than poetry, I write children’s books. I had some good news in Nov 2020 – my newest book Clarissa was published by Handersen Publishing. Today and tomorrow, it is free for kindle on Amazon.

Free for Kindle on Amazon 9 and 10 Jan 2021

A book for young readers, Clarissa explores the magic of nature. With the help of two wise friends, a fire spirit and an oak tree, young Clarissa learns to find her voice and speak her truth.

“A delightful, fantastical tale of how oak trees and humans can be friends” – Dr. James Canton, professor of Wild Writing

Clarissa is free for Kindle today and tomorrow. Paperbacks can be purchased from Amazon or directly from me. Buy it on my author website and I will sign and send.

And, yes the book starts with a poem.

Guest post – Fire, Water, Earth and Air

There are four oracles who all live on a place called The Beginning of an End.
They are the Elemental All-seeing Eyes and a person could always claim they were their friend.
Ask the Eye of the Fire and it would reply: find your heart and soul, let them burn bright and aim for a goal.
Talk to Water’s Eye and it will say: feel your calm and flow, feel your wishing grow.
Remark to the All-seeing Eye of the Earth and it could tell you: search for your place of comfort and love, your place of hearing and above.
Speak to the Air of the Eye and it might comment: gather your freeness and breath, gather your energy and death.
And then, with all that in mind, you board your boat and sail away from the Beginning of an End, feeling like you have made amend.

This amazing poem is from a talented 14 yr old, Beatrice. I have read it a few times to myself aloud, and find so many depths of meaning.

Fire of Spring

She stands at the
star of the hill,
red hair curling
and unfurling
like a flag.

We quicken
to see her,
with foot, fur
and seedling
heart.

The nights
were deep,
we lost
countless things
in the dark.

Now she
crests the hill
red, fire.

So bright she is,
the darker stars
fade out
and the candles
in our hearts
flame again.

Dear readers, to those of you transitioning from winter to spring, may you find new fire for your dreams and schemes.

Element Girls

Dear readers,

I have just published a book, Element Girls: The Lost Goddess. Four friends discover the powers of Fire, Water, Earth and Air in a quest that takes them to Hawaii, where legends come to life. This adventure is a girl-power, friendship and magic-driven story for preteens, young teens, and the teen-at-heart.

Thank you for reading this far. Now, as is more usual on this blog, a poem- I’ve been reflecting on the water element.

Each love,
each sea turtle
strolling aquatic
his end of the Earth,

each drifting sea star,

open I hold
each love
with my own
star arms,

I welcome
all the vast
ocean into
my heart

so her secrets
and my secrets
bleed into
each other

and we become
the same
fluid love.

Heart of the Rose

My lungs crave
an uncommon air,
fruit of sun,
rain and dirt,

the sweet scent
of the flame
at the heart of
the rose.

One fell at her feet,

the sun lit
the stage
in gold,

my own heart
in the air
with her leaps,

toe pointed true
she spun through
the floor,
burning

until the rose opened

teaching me
the strength
in her delicate grace,

arms wide

the silk dress of
petals unfurled
to reveal

a heart of flame

the sun contained
in the delicate
body

born
of rain
and dirt
and fire.

Elements of Love

Red sun lifts
As smaller loves
Flit
Butterfly flames
Lit with silk
Kisses catch
Fire until only
Ashes remain.

Yellow sun beams
As lesser loves fly
Phoenix wings sing
Golden tails
Soar high
Leave earth and
Freeze, scatter
Back to ground
Frozen fire
Broken ice
Without a sound.

Dark glacial seas
Kissed by red
The morning ice
Sings reflections
Roused from
Winter sleep
For just a minute
Until a braver day.

A lesser heart may weep
For a brighter signal
Not these warm whispers
Slow, constant and eternal.
